From April 2025, in principle, if you do not enter your PIN, you will not be able to use your credit card.

Personal authentication by credit card signature PIN bypass (skip entering your PIN number)will be abolished as a general rule at the end of March 2025.

Starting in April, you will be required to enter your PIN number.This applies to credit cards equipped with an IC chip.

 

The abolition of identity authentication through signatures on credit cards was initiated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Japan Credit Card Association, and others.

Possible reasons for abolishing identity verification by signature include the following:

・There is a high risk of fraudulent use if the card is stolen or lost and given to someone else, or if the card is counterfeited.
・Sign panel-less IC credit cards have become widespread
・Payment terminals are now available that require users to operate them themselves and enter their PIN when making payments at stores.
